Some projects from my days in the Visualization group at the NCDOT

NC 2004 Airport Guide (July 2004)

The 2004 Airport Guide for North Carolina. Not really a visualization project, but my only 'legit' programming project. The guide was a a 130 page booklet of photos and data of all of the airports in North Carolina. Our team was given the raw photos of the airports and we drew in the lines and symbols to make a legible diagram. We were also given a spreadsheet of all of the data that needed to be included. The printers wanted a final version in word, so I created a VBA script that read the database and assembled all of pages into the final word document.

NC Moving Ahead (August 2003)

Images for the North Carolina Moving Ahead program.
This image were used for publicity in Governor Easley's $700 million modernization and public transportation plan

U-2926 Winston Salem (June 2002)

This is a proposed bridge in Winston Salem. Of major concern to the city of Salem is the antique look of the concrete bridge rail. The bridge and rail were both modeled in Microstation, and Photoshop was used to combine the rendered 3d image into pictures of the existing site.

Atkins Branch Stream Mitigation, Kinston (April 2002)

This is a stream mitigation project in the city of Kinston

B-3334 (November 2001)

This is a first attempt for a completely 3d image.
A new bridge is to be built and the city is concerned about the design for the bridge rails. Between the actual design of the rail (concrete or steel), the city was also interested in looking at alternatives in materials such as aluminum, wrought iron, and green painted steel. And yes I do know that the text should read "green" and "red", not "existing" and "proposed" but I felt like reusing the old code.

R-2201 (Feb 2001)

The Existing road had 10 ft lanes and was becoming a traffic problem. It was decided to increase the lane width to 12 ft. The existing photos were taken from a bucket truck at about 30' off the roadway. The Proposed picture was painted in with photoshop ( A 2-D drawing program). No 3-d models were used.

U-3303 (Jan 2001)

The Existing 2-lane road was scheduled to be rebuild. The Question was whether to build a 5-lane road with a center turn lane, or a 4-lane road with a grass median divider. These picture are my attempt at finding the fastest way to get a reasonable visualization for a first-look. An Existing 5-Lane road was found 1 mile from the project and pictures of it were taken for the purpose of cutting and pasting the road into the project photos. Given the time spent I would say that this was an unqualified success.
